Judges Critique
Midland Shar Pei Club Limit Show
Date: 18th February 2012
Judge:
Mrs J. BANNISTER

It's always an honour to judge a breed Club's show and I would like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge their Annual Limit show at St Marys Hall, Solihull. What a super venue this is for such events, easy to find, spacious and light, with plenty of room for all and ideal flooring for the dogs to move to full advantage. I would also like to thank the exhibitors for their entries and for accepting my decisions so sportingly. The ringside atmosphere was most pleasant with plenty of appreciation for the winners. During the lunch break a puppy walk was held, giving exhibitors the opportunity to showcase and socialise their up and coming new show stars. This was very well supported and the excellent quality of the puppies on the day must bode well for the future. I have watched the breed develop since the early 1990's and I am encouraged to see the constant improvement in breed type and soundness. Well done to all Shar Pei exhibitors/breeders who are working hard to produce Shar Pei of great breed type and at the same time meeting the stringent health and soundness requirements our Kennel Club now demands.

VETERAN DOG
1st  Bull & Warren's Starferry Devil Rays: A Black dog who at almost 12 years old defies time. In excellent condition and moved out well. A very sound boy, nicely balanced with good shoulder angulation, correct dip and rise which he still holds firm on the move. A real credit to his owners. Best Veteran in Show
2nd Bayliss's Tianshan Wacky Willow: 8 year old fawn dog, pleasing head with correct forward facing ears. Eyes are well set and good shape but I would prefer a darker colour. Neck is muscular and strong but I found him a little 'stuffy' in this department. Good, clean, sound forelegs, keeps his elbows close to body. Topline didn't show the required dip and rise as he tended to roach his back today.

PUPPY DOG
1st Hogkinson's Bullpei Benni The Dip: A promising fawn 7 month old dog, very well grown for his age, I loved his overall balance and impressive square outline. Lovely head, with a broad flat skull and good workings. Broad muzzle with enough padding, a large wide nose, dark eye, small thick ears. Correct bristly coat, calm affectionate temperament, straight forelegs with good bone, feet would benefit from being slightly tighter, correct angulation fore and aft, topline shows the dip and rise required, has just enough wrinkle with nothing exaggerated and everything is in the right place at this age. I'm sure he will have a bright future. Best Opposite Sex, Best Dog, & Best Puppy In Show

POST GRADUATE DOG
1st Wisbey's Qinrose Jedi Knight: Horsecoat male with a head in proportion to body, forward facing ears, decent eye, underline could be tighter and topline was rather level. Strides out well when settled but tends to be erratic.
2nd Howson's Screwby Doo at Tairoko: Also a horsecoat, a little less substance than 1, I would prefer a broader, flatter skull. Decent angulation all round. Feet were flat rather than arched and turned out which in turn affects his movement.

LIMIT DOG
1st Wisbey's Qinrose Jimmy Choo: Balanced dog of good size, pleasing head, good straight front, well arched tight feet, tight underline, well muscled and this showed in his movement which was vigorous and free. Res Best Dog

OPEN DOG
1st Bull & Warren's Starferry Shanghai Style: Cream dog, top end for size, proportionate head, with medium length neck, set well on the shoulders, lay of shoulder is OK but needs more rear angulation as he tends to stand rump high. Stands 4 square on good feet and moves out sound and free.

VETERAN BITCH
1st Jenkin's Imzadi Made for Fame: Two very endearing ladies, who obviously are enjoying their retirement judging by the excess pounds they have acquired! I don't think they have seen the ring for a while as they seem to have forgotten what to do.

PUPPY BITCH
1st Chandler's Chadshar Justamaizyn: Well developed 9 months old girl with an exquisite head, very pretty indeed, lovely eye, small ears and broad well padded muzzle. I liked her outline and hope she continues to grow on and balance out, needs to just come up on the leg a tad more. Super tight, arched feet, good dip and rise, coarse coat. Wonderful strong colour and very steady on the move for one so young. Nicely handled too. Pushed hard for best pup.
2nd Wisbey's Bullpei Ivory Lace for Qinrose: Another high quality puppy who has every thing in the right place. Super balanced outline, excellent body to leg ratio, coarse correct coat, moved with freedom and drive. Unlucky to meet 1 on such fine form but I'm sure these girls will change places as they go up the classes.

JUNIOR BITCH
1st Webb's Taimoosie Small Surprise for Chifido: Stylish square bitch of super breed type, she oozes quality, has an impressive outline which showed all the
attributes I was looking for. Beautiful head, with pleasing workings, dark eye, small thick forward facing ears, she is correctly balanced all round, with just enough wrinkle. Well handled to a faultless performance. A Very sound bitch who fits the standard so well with nothing exaggerated. At just a year old I feel the best is yet to come. Pleased to award this beautiful girl Best In Show. Congratulations!
2nd Butterfield & Bradley's Chequerpei External Flame: A lot to like about this girl, she has good body proportions and a nice amount of wrinkle. Pretty head, but sadly, she was not happy today and quite apprehensive.

LIMIT BITCH
1st Butterfield's Loupei's Grace N Favour with Chequerpei: I liked this girl alot, she shows good breed type and is very showy, good for size and pushed hard for BB. Excellent head proportions, flat skull with pleasing amount of workings. Correct dip and rise, straight bone and good feet. Plenty of wrinkle and correct bristle coat. Moved free and with purpose.
2. Bull & Warren's Starferry Luvya To Bits: Pretty fawn bitch, very pleasing in the head with neat ears of good size and set, liked her dark eyes. Longer in body than 1, and would benefit from a little more rear angulation. Correct dip and rise, and well set tail. Good for bone and stands on excellent feet. Moved smartly and sound.

OPEN BITCH
1st Bull & Warren's Starferry Belle Of The Ball: Well put together bitch, top size but well proportioned, super head with flat skull and just enough wrinkling and padding over the muzzle, good angulation all round, good bone and feet. Moved positively and handled well.

ANN LOMAS MEMORIAL STAKES
1st Wisbey's Qinrose Chantilly Lace: Compact Bitch with a pleasing outline, loved her rich colour, expressive eyes. Very balanced all round, excellent leg to body ratio and shows the correct dip and rise, real quality evident in this girl. Good feet and tail. Correctly coated and moved to impress.
2nd Bull & Warren's Starferry's Luvya To Bits.
