Judges Critique
Midland Shar Pei Club Open Show
Date: 19th July 2008

Sue Cooke

This club puts on some of the most happy and enjoyable shows, so friendly, and the exhibitors are lavish with their applause. A dedicated committee ensured that all ran smoothly. My general impressions of the breed today were some good and some not so. Coats were excellent, harsh whether brush or horsecoat, a big improvement from the days of the softies. Skin has improved beyond all expectations. Eyes were bright and dry with little indication of past problems in this area. Bites were satisfactory, as was pigmentation, but I was surprised how difficult it was to see some of the lower teeth because we still have tight lower lips. Exhibitors were asked to show bite and pigment and I was a little taken back that this proved difficult even for the, handlers with some dog’s actually backing off. Dogs were generally well balanced with sufficient bone but still some with too much body wrinkle. On the question of movement I was disappointed to see so many with unsound action considering that shoulder and hip angles were not at all bad. The problem seems to stem from the articulation of the lower leg joint, the pastern and hock, some so loose that these joints were swiveling giving the strangest gyrations and overlapping strides. Feet also play a part in this problem, too many too long and flat. Having said all that I had a really enjoyable day and hope my criticisms will not be taken personally, Type is so important, but so is soundness, and we owe it to all dogs to breed them so that they have the chance of an active and healthy life.

VETERAN DOG
1st  Lloyd's Konishiki Slave To Love With Janeryl: 8 year old red fawn presented in excellent condition, really liked the headpiece for shape and balance. Clean dark eyes, good width of muzzle and small ears. Well built and compact with strong bone, Topline firm, decent tailset, broad chest. Front could be tighter but good turn of stifle, feet getting a bit flat. Better coat than 2nd. Moved well in all directions. Well built with strong bone. Best Veteran in Show
2nd. Rodger's AM.CH.Jade East Toka Life Is A Breeze At Sharbull: Red, softer coat, one of the better movers, well made head. Topline a touch too level and tail could be higher set. Chest to elbow and good broad front. Good turn of stifle, moved satisfactorily.

MINOR PUPPY DOG
1st Chandler's Meixiu Hellfire At Chanshar: Red fawn, good balance and had a pleasing outline. Head well sculptured, dark eye and small ears. Neck in proportion. Straight forelegs with firm pasterns. Good top and underline. Well turned stifles. Nice coat developing. Shows maturity when stacked although moving like a loose puppy. Best Puppy in Show & Reserve Best Dog (RAY EDWARDS CUP)
2nd. Rowlands’ Meixiu Hell Raiser: Red, small with more wrinkled in body than 1st. Pleasing head and expression. Compact body. Still soft in topline and needs more length of leg. Well set tail and excellent rear quarters.

PUPPY DOG
1st James & Diggins’ Tianshan Redmoon Shining: Red fawn, not settled to begin with but then happy enough to be handled. Good coat. Liked the head shape, well moulded, dark eyes and neat ears. More balanced at this stage than 2nd. Good topline and short loin with well carried coin tail. Body to leg ratio was good the movement loose.
2nd. Bull & Warren's Starferry Wots Yer Problem: Fawn, Head of correct proportions but overdone in wrinkle for me. Very good coat texture. Good top line and high set tail. Depth to elbow, straight legs and tight feet. Well angulated forequarters and moved better in front than behind.

JUNIOR DOG
1st James’ Confucian Sweet Baby James (IMP): Well handled. Very good in outline with good balance body to leg length, head of good type but eyes damp. Very loose and uncoordinated, particularly in front pasterns which adversely affected movement.

NOVICE DOG
1st James’ Confucian Sweet Baby James (IMP): As Junior Dog

POST GRADUATE DOG
1st Butterfield's Chequerpei Secret Code: Dilute cream of pleasing quality all through. Good bone and balance with correct proportions. Harsh coat, head shapely and with just the right amount of work, broad muzzle and skull. Strong neck, correct topline and high set tail. Very good angles front and rear. Broad chest, depth to tight elbows and clean underline. Profile movement showed good length of stride but could tighten in front pasterns to advantage. Best Dog (PENSKI ROSE BOWL) & Best in Show
2nd. Wisbey's Qinrose Feel The Force: Correct coloured black with very good coat. Head in balance. Body has enough bone, topline and tail set OK. Front movement let him down, out at elbow and loose in pastern action.

LIMIT DOG
1st Wisbey's Qinrose Jedi Knight: Red fawn. Liked the more traditional head on this one. Nice ratio skull to muzzle and cleaner all through. Dark eyes, small neat ears and well set. Harsh coat. Topline good but tail a bit low. Chest to elbow. Good angles front and rear with nice turn of stifle but movement did let him down.
2nd. Grimshaw's Headholme Easy Rider At Sharpuggles: Red fawn. Well constructed square body. Masculine. Pleasing head and eye. Good neck, topline and tailset. Baggy hocks. Did not move to his full potential.

OPEN DOG
1st Pearce & Werrett's Dali South China Sea Of Burgoyne (IMP HK): Ultra tradition exhibit. Black of correct colour with the harshest of coats. Finer all through than we are used to today. Head has little wrinkle except over the brow and is finer in foreface with a bone mouth. Darkest of eyes, smallest of ears and excellent pigment. Firm proud neck, decent topline and tight coin tail. Short loin and just enough rib and depth. Angles satisfactory but pasterns could be stronger. Toes long. Fair movement.

VETERAN BITCH
1st Wisbey's Qinrose Call Me Madam: A red fawn 8 year old who does not look her age, still full of vim and vigour. Lovely condition. Good head, dark clean eyes. Liked her outline. Well boned and with a broad deep chest. Decent angles. Backline firm but tail a bit low set. Lovely tight feet. Movement was satisfactory.
2nd. Wisbey's Starferry Scarlet Ribbons For Qinrose: Red fawn carrying extra weight. Head OK if a little small. Good topline and tail on top. Would like more turn of stifle and tighter feet.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH
1st Bradley & Poole's Jolerob Angel For The Pickin At Coatakinti: Fawn, well balanced with decent bone and everything in proportion. Feminine head which appealed for shape and structure with dark clean eyes and small ears. Good topline with high set tail. Angles good with straight forelegs and decent feet. Enough bend of stifle. Moved better than a lot.
2nd. Smith's Forgevalley Shine On Bellicose: Fawn, slightly shorter in loin than 1st. Pleasing head, feminine with lovely expression, dark clean eyes and neat ears. Good front. Firm topline and good coin tail. Stands on good legs and feet but needs more turn of stifle. Movement OK.

PUPPY BITCH
1st Andrews’ Konishiki Lucy Lockett: Red fawn, Liked the headpiece, feminine without weakness. Good neck and top line with tail well set on. Square in profile and compact with good bone through to well arched feet. Legs straight and sound and shoulder well angulated. Movement was balanced with good stride. Best Puppy Bitch

JUNIOR BITCH
1st Sutherland's Witchgait Wish Upon A Star: Red fawn. Head well moulded and balanced to body. Slightly longer than she is tall so would prefer a touch more length of leg to balance. Topline firm and well carried tail but rather wrinkled over the body. Well sprung ribs, chest broad and deep. Well boned, good legs and feet. One of the few that moved correctly.
2nd. Obey's Kenmilleven Princess Pearl: Chocolate of good colour who looked right for balance and profile but slightly finer in bone. Topline and tailset correct. Let down by very loose front movement and soft feet.

NOVICE BITCH
1st Marsh's Forgevalley Glory Be: Red, smaller bitch. Liked her head, feminine, clean dark eyes, small ears and lovely expression. Strong neck, firm top and underline with coin tail on top. Sound angles, legs and feet with nice turn of stifle and parallel rear pasterns. Best mover in this class.

POST GRADUATE BITCH
1st Bull & Warren's Starferry Beijing Beauty: Fawn, Bigger bitch but not overdone. Harshest of coats. Well shaped and padded muzzle, balanced to skull. Would insist on flying her ears. Well developed neck set to good shoulder with straight well boned forelegs and arched feet. Topline strong if a touch long in loin. Excellent tail carriage and set. Chest broad and deep with well arched ribs. Good turn of stifle with well let down hocks. Movement excellent.
2nd. Butterfield & Bradley's Jolerob Lovin Angels As Well At Chequerpei: Smaller red bitch with a lovely head and expression. Another who was flying her ears. Balanced and sound. Would prefer less body wrinkle. Moved well.

LIMIT BITCH
1st Morris’ Tianshan Passion Flower At Ashowai: Red fawn who was so well put together. Loved the balance of this bitch. Excellent head for shape and type. Good bone through to feet. Correct angles front and rear. Best of toplines with high set coin tail and compact and strong through the loin. Tidy underline. Moved soundly in all directions. Best Bitch
2nd. Rowlands’ Drakkars Safe And Sound: Red, liked the shape of this one but tail down and not looking happy. A good quality bitch all through and moved well.

OPEN BITCH
1st Lloyd's Sharsown Jessica Rabbit JW ShCM: Red fawn with lots of appeal. Head typical for the breed with pleasing expression. Liked her outline, nothing overdone, sound in bone and angles with parallel forelegs and decent turn of stifle. First class topline and tail set. Compact over the loin. Moved well with a free action. Reserve Best Bitch
2nd. Morris’ CH. Tianshan Say It With Flowers For Ashowai: Red fawn who I did well for as a puppy. Would like less wrinkle as an adult and cleaner hocks. Never the less she is a quality exhibit with so much to commend her. Best of heads, well constructed nose to tail, compact and with excellent legs and feet. Not just as accurate as 1st. today on the move.
